Price of a flagpole in Belgium: what affects the cost

The price of a flagpole varies widely in Belgium, from a simple façade pole to a tall pole with an internal halyard for a business. This guide gives no amounts, because they differ between suppliers and change quickly. Instead it sets out what affects the price of a flagpole, which costs come on top of the pole itself and which rights a consumer has.
What affects the price of the pole
Height
A taller pole needs more material, a thicker wall and a heavier foundation. Going from 6 to 8 or 10 metres therefore has a noticeable effect on the price. Choosing the height is covered in the guide on flagpole heights.
Material
Aluminium, polyester, wood and steel differ in price, weight and maintenance. An anodised or powder-coated finish in a colour also affects the price. More on this is in the guide on flagpole materials.
Halyard system and accessories
A pole with an internal halyard and a lockable hatch is priced differently from a pole with an external halyard. A revolving truck, a banner arm, a tilting base or lighting come on top. More on this is in the guides on flagpole accessories and flagpole mechanics.
Wind zone and flag size
The Belgian national annex to the Eurocode on wind actions, NBN EN 1991-1-4 ANB, uses a reference wind speed of 23 to 26 m/s. A pole designed for a higher wind speed or a larger flag often has a heavier profile, which raises the price.
Costs besides the pole
- Foundation: a concrete base with a ground sleeve or base plate, depending on the height and the soil.
- Digging and plan request: rules for digging aim to avoid cables and pipes: via KLIP in Flanders, and via KLIM-CICC in Brussels and Wallonia. More on this is in the guide on flagpole installation.
- Installation: by the supplier, a contractor or oneself. A roof pole or a tall pole often involves an aerial work platform or a crane.
- Permit: in some cases a planning permit or environmental permit, with any administrative fees at the municipality.
- Flag: the flag itself is usually not included. More on this is in the guide on the price of a flag.
Price and lifespan
A pole that needs little maintenance and lasts a long time can cost less over the years than a cheaper pole that needs replacing sooner. Parts such as the halyard, the pulley and the hooks wear and are replaced regularly. More on this is in the guide on flagpole lifespan.
Rights when buying
- Legal guarantee: according to the FPS Economy, two years when a consumer buys a new product from a business. Since 1 January 2022, the burden of proving that a defect existed at delivery lies with the seller for the full two years.
- Commercial guarantee: according to the FPS Economy, an additional guarantee from the manufacturer or seller can only extend or broaden the legal guarantee.
- Right of withdrawal: for distance purchases, the FPS Economy gives a withdrawal period of 14 calendar days (articles VI.47 to VI.53 of the Code of Economic Law). Exceptions can apply to a made-to-measure pole or installation already carried out.
A quotation that clearly describes the pole, the wind zone, the flag size, the foundation and the installation makes it easier to compare prices.
Frequently asked questions
What affects the price of a flagpole most?
Mainly the height, the material and the halyard system. A taller pole needs a thicker wall and a larger foundation. A pole with an internal halyard and a lockable hatch is priced differently from a simple pole with an external halyard.
Is installation included in the price of a flagpole?
That varies by supplier. The foundation, digging, installation and possibly a permit or a KLIP or KLIM-CICC plan request can be charged separately. A quotation usually states what is included.
Which guarantee applies when buying a flagpole?
According to the FPS Economy, a consumer who buys a new product from a business has a legal guarantee of two years. Since 1 January 2022, the burden of proving that a defect existed at delivery lies with the seller for those two years. A commercial guarantee can only extend the legal guarantee.
Does the wind zone affect the price?
Yes. The Belgian national annex to the Eurocode on wind actions uses 23 to 26 m/s, depending on the location. A pole for a higher wind load or a larger flag often has a heavier profile and a larger foundation, which affects the price.
