Flagpole heights in Mexico: sizes, flag and wind

This page is an English translation of the Spanish original. Where the two versions differ, the Spanish text is the original.

The height of a flagpole depends on the site, on the flag it will carry and on the wind. In Mexico, the range is huge: from 6 metre poles in front of a school to monumental flagpoles of more than 100 metres. This guide brings together the usual sizes and the factors that influence the choice.

Usual heights

Mexican makers offer:

  • Banderas México: tapered or telescopic monumental poles of 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 15, 20, 24, 25, 30, 36 and 40 metres.
  • Grupo Symac: aluminium poles of 4.50 to 24.40 metres and steel poles of up to 120 metres.
  • Astabanderas de México: aluminium poles in stock of 20 to 35 feet (about 6 to 10.7 metres), suitable according to the maker up to about 25 metres.

Astabanderas de México lists among its projects esplanades, monuments, industrial parks, schools, housing developments and shopping centres.

Exposed height and total length

According to Astabanderas de México, the total length of a flagpole equals the exposed height plus 10% that sits inside the foundation: a 30 foot pole is actually 33 feet long. The guide to flagpole installation covers the foundation.

Monumental flagpoles

The 1999 decree considers flagpoles of at least 50 metres to be monumental. According to BHC México, the tallest in the country are:

CityHeight of the flagpole
Durango, Durango125 m
Piedras Negras, Coahuila120 m
Iguala, Guerrero110 m
Monterrey, Nuevo León; Heroico Colegio Militar, Campo Militar Marte and San Jerónimo, Mexico City; Tijuana; Ciudad Juárez; Ensenada; Cancún; Nuevo Laredo; Chihuahua; Dolores Hidalgo; San Luis Potosí100 m

Grupo Symac states that it built the flagpole in Dolores Hidalgo, 105 metres high.

Height and flag size

The law does not relate the height of the flagpole to the size of the flag. The only official reference is in the 1999 decree: a flagpole of at least 50 metres, a flag of at least 25 by 14.3 metres, a length equal to half the height. The flag size calculator applies that proportion to each height, and the guide to flag sizes shows the standard sizes.

The wind

The taller the pole and the larger the flag, the greater the force of the wind on the structure. The Manual of Civil Works Design of the Federal Electricity Commission, in its chapter on wind design (2020 edition), is a reference for structural calculation in Mexico: it sets regional wind speeds by zone of the country. The coasts of the Gulf, the Caribbean and the Pacific are exposed to tropical cyclones; the guide to flagpole safety explains the alert system.

The wind also affects flags. According to Forbes México, the monumental flag at the San Jerónimo roundabout in Mexico City tore in the strong winds and rains of the season and was sent for repair to the factory of the Ministry of National Defence.

Height limits

No federal law sets a maximum height for a private flagpole. Limits come from each municipality’s or borough’s building regulations and urban development programmes, which may regulate the height of structures in each zone. The guide to flagpole installation covers permits, and the guide to flagpole materials the limits of each material.

Frequently asked questions

How tall are the most common flagpoles?

Mexican makers offer outdoor aluminium flagpoles of about 4.5 to 25 metres and taller steel ones. Banderas México lists poles of 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12 and 15 metres, among others, and Astabanderas de México stocks heights of 20 to 35 feet, about 6 to 10.7 metres.

What is the tallest flagpole in Mexico?

According to BHC México, the one in Durango, 125 metres high, followed by those in Piedras Negras (120 metres) and Iguala (110 metres). Many other monumental flagpoles, such as those at Campo Militar Marte, San Jerónimo, Monterrey or Tijuana, are 100 metres high.

How long is a 30 foot flagpole really?

More than 30 feet. According to Astabanderas de México, the total length of a flagpole equals the exposed height plus 10% for its foundation: a 30 foot pole is actually 33 feet long.

Does the wind affect the height of a flagpole?

Yes. The force of the wind increases with height, and in Mexico it varies widely between regions, from the central valleys to the coasts exposed to hurricanes. The Manual of Civil Works Design of the Federal Electricity Commission sets regional wind speeds for the design of structures.
