Flagpole materials in Mexico: aluminium, steel, brass and more

The material of a flagpole decides how tall it can be, how it copes with wind and weather, and how much maintenance it needs. In Mexico, makers work mainly with aluminium for outdoor poles of up to about 25 metres and with steel for taller ones, and with brass, iron, plastic and wood for colour-guard staffs, bases and display cases. This guide compares the materials based on what makers and the rules say.

Aluminium

According to Grupo Symac, its aluminium flagpoles are made from 6063 alloy, in seamless tube to the ASTM B221 standard, with a satin finish, in heights of 4.50 to 24.40 metres. In contact with the air, aluminium forms an oxide layer that protects it from corrosion; the maker offers a lifetime guarantee against oxidation.

Astabanderas de México uses seamless 6063-T6 aluminium, with a bending strength of 25,000 PSI and a tensile strength of more than 30,000 PSI according to its data, and considers these poles suitable for heights of up to 25 metres. Besides the natural satin finish, it offers anodised finishes in natural, black and bronze, and powder coating in black, white, silver or bronze. Because of their anti-corrosion properties, the maker states that they need no painting or repainting.

Steel

Steel allows the greatest heights. According to Grupo Symac, its steel flagpoles are made from cold-rolled steel plate welded into a tube; they normally have a seam at the joints, which is covered with filler and exterior paint. They need periodic maintenance and can reach up to 120 metres, like the monumental flagpoles. Banderas México offers tapered or telescopic monumental poles in iron tube or aluminium, from 4 to 40 metres.

Stainless steel

Banderas Universal makes flagpoles of 3 to 100 metres in carbon steel, aluminium and stainless steel. Among the makers consulted, it is the only one that mentions stainless steel for outdoor poles.

Brass, iron and plastic

For colour-guard, desk and vehicle staffs, BHC México works with four materials: plastic, iron, aluminium and solid brass. The finishes vary by metal: iron is offered brass-plated (gold) or chrome-plated (silver), aluminium anodised in matt gold or natural polished (silver), and brass in bright natural or chrome.

Wood

Wood appears mainly in the wooden and glass display cases in which the colour-guard flag is kept, in pine or mahogany according to Banderas México, and in some bases. The makers consulted offer their outdoor flagpoles in aluminium and steel.

Lightning and earthing

A tall metal flagpole can be struck by lightning. Grupo Symac includes earthing with a lightning conductor among the installation stages of its aluminium poles. At workplaces, NOM-022-STPS-2015 regulates the safety conditions for static electricity, including lightning protection systems; the guide to flagpole safety covers this point.

Frequently asked questions

Which material is most common for an outdoor flagpole?

Aluminium, for poles of up to about 25 metres. Grupo Symac makes seamless 6063 alloy aluminium poles from 4.50 to 24.40 metres, and Astabanderas de México uses 6063-T6 aluminium, which it considers suitable up to about 25 metres. Steel is used for greater heights.

Is an aluminium flagpole painted?

According to Grupo Symac, in contact with the air aluminium forms an oxide layer that protects it from corrosion, and according to Astabanderas de México its poles need no painting, although anodised finishes and powder coating in several colours are available.

What maintenance does a steel flagpole need?

According to Grupo Symac, steel flagpoles are made from cold-rolled steel plate welded into a tube, and their seams are covered with filler and exterior paint. They need periodic maintenance, in return for reaching heights of up to 120 metres.

Does a metal flagpole need a lightning conductor?

It depends on the installation. Grupo Symac includes earthing with a lightning conductor among the installation stages of its aluminium poles. At workplaces, NOM-022-STPS-2015 regulates lightning protection systems, and a specialist can assess each case.
