Flagpole and flag lifespan in the Netherlands

Published Written by

This page is an English translation of the Dutch original. Where the two versions differ, the Dutch text is the original.

A well-installed flagpole lasts many years; the flag and the halyard far fewer. Exactly how long depends on the material, the location and the maintenance. This guide describes what determines the lifespan of the pole, its parts and the flag, based on what Dutch suppliers say, and what the statutory warranty means.

The pole

According to the supplier Vlaggenmasten.nl, aluminium is very well suited to long outdoor use with normal use and maintenance. The material does not rust, and the pole needs little maintenance. Polyester is, according to the supplier, strong and low-maintenance. Wood needs more maintenance: the paint or varnish is touched up periodically to keep the pole in good condition for a long time. A wooden pole whose varnish is not maintained can rot from moisture. More is in the guide to flagpole materials.

Wearing parts

The parts that move or hang in the sun last less long than the pole:

  • the halyard, which weathers in sun and rain
  • the pulley and the finial, which turn and get dirty
  • the hooks or snap hooks on the halyard
  • with an internal winch system, the winch and the counterweight

According to the supplier, these parts are checked regularly. A halyard replaced in good time does not break inside the pole. More is in the guide to flagpole maintenance.

The flag

The flag has the shortest lifespan. How long it lasts depends mainly on how often it flies and in what weather. A flag that flies outdoors every day wears much faster than one flown only on the ten fixed flag days. According to the flag supplier DVC, a larger flag wears faster, so a flag that flies every day is not too large. According to Vlaggenmasten.nl, a flag usually lasts longer if it is taken down in good time in strong wind and storms.

The custom of not leaving the flag out between sunset and sunrise, described in the guide to flag rules, also spares the flag. According to the flag instruction of the municipality of Zaanstad, a flag that is worn, torn, badly faded or can no longer be cleaned is replaced.

The Dutch climate

The Netherlands has a lot of wind, especially on the coast and on open ground. According to the supplier, the wind load is greater there, and the pole, diameter and foundation are matched to it. Salt in the air on the coast attacks metal parts more quickly. Rain and moisture matter mainly for wooden poles and for flags put away wet.

Statutory warranty

According to the supplier, the manufacturer’s warranty varies by material and version and is stated with the product. According to ACM ConsuWijzer, there is also always a statutory warranty: a product ought to work properly for a certain time, as long as the buyer could expect. For durable products this can, according to ACM, be longer than two years. If a pole breaks too soon in normal use, the seller is the point of contact. Damage from normal wear, incorrect use or neglected maintenance usually falls outside the warranty terms, according to the supplier. More is in the guide to flagpole repair.
