The price of a flag in Spain: what determines it

The price of a flag in Spain ranges from a small hand flag to a several-metre official flag with an embroidered coat of arms for a town hall. This guide gives no figures, because they vary widely between suppliers and change often. It explains which factors determine the price of a flag and what rights the buyer has.
What determines the price of a flag
Size
Size is the first price factor: more surface means more fabric, more ink and more sewing. Flagpole flags almost always follow the 2:3 proportion, in sizes such as 100 × 150, 150 × 225 or 200 × 300 cm. The guide to flag sizes lists the common sizes and the official types.
Fabric and weight
Most outdoor flags are made of polyester. ClickBanderas takes a standard 115 g/m² fabric as its reference; heavier fabrics are tougher and usually cost more. Indoor and ceremonial flags may be made of satin or finer fabrics, with fringes and cords, which is also reflected in the price.
Printing or embroidery
A printed flag is the most common option. A flag with an embroidered coat of arms, like those of military units, which under the Flag Regulation bear the coat of arms embroidered in silk, silver and gold, has a much higher price. Official flags are made in the colours defined in Royal Decree 441/1981, flag red and flag weld yellow.
The coat of arms
A flag of Spain with the coat of arms usually has a higher price than one without, because the coat of arms is a detailed two-sided motif. Under Law 39/1981, the coat of arms is compulsory on the flags of public buildings; a private individual can choose.
Finishing
According to ClickBanderas, a flag for a halyard flagpole has standard finishing with rings, a reinforcing tape on the side and double stitching all round; a flag for a flagpole with a rotating arm has a sleeve at the top for the bar. Snap hooks and extra reinforcements make the flag more expensive but extend its life.
Standard or customised
Flags of Spain, of the autonomous communities and of other countries are mass-produced and cost less than a customised flag with a logo or its own design, which is made to order. The number of units also affects the price per flag.
Price and lifespan
An outdoor flag wears with wind, sun and rain, and it is usual to renew it periodically. A cheaper flag can cost more in the long run if it is replaced more often. According to La Tienda de las Banderas, a flag too large for its flagpole increases the wind load and strains the seams, fittings and support, and rubbing against walls, branches or cables speeds up wear. The guide to flagpole maintenance also covers caring for the flag.
Consumer rights
- Withdrawal: for a distance purchase, such as online, the consumer has fourteen calendar days to withdraw without giving a reason, under article 102 of the consolidated text of the General Law for the Defence of Consumers and Users. The period runs from receipt of the flag (article 104).
- Customised flags: under article 103, the right of withdrawal does not apply to goods made to the consumer’s specifications or clearly personalised, such as a flag with a logo or a special size.
- Guarantee: under article 120, the seller is liable for lack of conformity that becomes apparent within three years of delivery. Under article 121, defects appearing in the first two years are presumed, unless proven otherwise, to have existed at delivery.
These rights belong to consumers. Purchases by businesses and public authorities are governed by the contract and, in the public sector, by public procurement rules. The guide to the price of a flagpole covers the other half of the installation.
Frequently asked questions
What determines the price of a flag?
Above all the size, the fabric and its weight, the printing or embroidery technique, whether it bears the coat of arms, the finishing (sleeve, rings, snap hooks, reinforcements) and whether the flag is standard or customised. The number of units also affects the price per flag.
Does a flag of Spain with the coat of arms cost more?
Generally yes, because the coat of arms is a detailed motif that takes more work, especially if it is embroidered. Law 39/1981 requires the coat of arms only on the flags of public buildings, State bodies, the Armed Forces and diplomatic missions; for other uses, the flag without it is equally the flag of Spain.
Can a flag bought online be returned?
Generally yes. Under article 102 of the consolidated text of the General Law for the Defence of Consumers and Users, the consumer has fourteen calendar days to withdraw from a distance purchase. Article 103 excludes goods made to the consumer’s specifications or clearly personalised, such as a flag with a logo.
What guarantee does a flag have?
Under article 120 of the same consolidated text, the seller is liable for lack of conformity that becomes apparent within three years of delivery. Article 121 presumes that defects appearing in the first two years already existed at delivery. Normal wear from wind and sun is not a lack of conformity.
Does the price of the flag affect how long it lasts?
Yes. A tougher fabric, a suitable weight and reinforced seams extend the life of a flag. According to ClickBanderas, a heavier flag weighs more and catches more wind, so it may need a slightly smaller size for the same flagpole.
