Flagpole heights in Spain: sizes and wind

This page is an English translation of the Spanish original. Where the two versions differ, the Spanish text is the original.

The height of a flagpole depends on the site, the flag it will carry and the wind. In Spain, makers offer heights of 4 to 16 metres, and height determines almost everything else: the flag size, the material, the foundation and, in some cases, the paperwork. This guide brings together what makers and the rules say.

Common heights

According to ClickBanderas, its fibreglass flagpoles range from 4 to 10 metres and its aluminium ones from 4 to 16 metres. Its reference table assigns a typical use to each height:

Height of the flagpoleFlagTypical use according to the maker
4 metres80 × 120 cmIndoors: reception, assembly hall
5 metres100 × 150 cmShop front, building entrance
6 metres120 × 180 cmCompany façade, industrial estate
8 metres150 × 220 cmLarge store, hotel, corporate headquarters
10 metres200 × 300 cmStadium, industrial building, institutional headquarters
12 metres250 × 375 cmTown hall, trade fair grounds, large public facility

Height and flag size

According to ClickBanderas, the general rule in the trade is that the flag does not exceed the top third of the flagpole. If the flag is proportionally larger, it does not unfurl properly on a rotating arm and exerts excessive side load on the arm, and on a halyard flagpole its weight and wind resistance put the pole under stresses it was not designed for. The flag size calculator shows the table size for each height.

For State buildings, the Flag Regulation starts from the height of the building, not the flagpole: type 2 above 25 metres, type 3 between 10 and 25 metres and type 4 below 10 metres, and type 3 on a flagpole fixed to the ground. The guide to flag sizes lists those types.

Wind

The Building Technical Code, in its Basic Document SE-AE, divides Spain into three wind zones with a basic dynamic pressure of 0.42 kN/m² in zone A, 0.45 kN/m² in zone B and 0.52 kN/m² in zone C. The taller the flagpole and the larger the flag, the greater the moment the wind exerts at the base.

ClickBanderas links those zones to the flagpole:

  • Zone A, which the maker places in the interior of the peninsula, Aragon and Castile: a standard fibreglass flagpole.
  • Zone B, the Mediterranean coast and the northern plateau: a reinforced flagpole or a flag 10% smaller.
  • Zone C, Galicia, the Cantabrian coast and the Canary Islands: a high-strength flagpole and a flag of no more than a quarter of the flagpole’s height.

The official zone map is in the Basic Document itself, and for permanent installations in high-wind zones the maker recommends checking the combination of flagpole and flag with it.

Height and foundation

A taller flagpole needs a larger foundation. According to ClickBanderas, with direct embedding in concrete, the most common method for permanent installations, the concrete block is at least one sixth of the total height of the flagpole deep: at least one metre for a 6-metre flagpole. The guide to flagpole installation covers the foundation.

Planning and aviation limits

There is no general State limit on the height of a flagpole. Depending on the legislation of the autonomous community and the local bylaws, height may determine whether a responsible declaration is enough or planning permission is needed. Near airports, Decree 584/1972 on aviation easements requires the prior approval of the aviation authority for any construction or installation in the easement zones or that may be an obstacle (article 30).

Frequently asked questions

Which flagpole heights are made in Spain?

According to the maker ClickBanderas, 4 to 10 metres in fibreglass and 4 to 16 metres in aluminium. Its reference table pairs each height with a flag size, from 80 × 120 cm for 4 metres to 250 × 375 cm for 12 metres.

How does flagpole height relate to the flag?

According to ClickBanderas, the general rule in the trade is that the flag does not exceed the top third of the flagpole. A flag that is too large does not unfurl properly on a rotating arm and puts a halyard flagpole under stresses it was not designed for.

Does wind affect height and size?

Yes. The Building Technical Code divides Spain into three wind zones, A, B and C. For zone B, ClickBanderas gives a reinforced flagpole or a flag 10% smaller, and for zone C a high-strength flagpole and a flag of no more than a quarter of the flagpole’s height.

Are there legal limits on flagpole height?

There is no general State limit. Height may affect which planning procedure applies, depending on the autonomous community and the municipality, and near airports any construction that may be an obstacle needs the prior approval of the aviation authority under Decree 584/1972 on aviation easements.
