Flagpole heights in Canada: common heights and local limits
Published Written by Flagpole Guides

Flagpoles in Canada are sold in both metres and feet, and the imperial sizes – 20, 25, 30 feet – are still the everyday language of the trade. Official guidance uses both: Canadian Heritage gives pole lengths in metres and feet, and the Gouvernement du Québec does the same for the flag of Québec. How high a pole may be is decided locally, by the municipality.
Common heights
| Height | Typical use |
|---|---|
| 15–22 ft (4.5–6.7 m) | Sectional and fibreglass poles for backyards, cottages and docks |
| 20–25 ft (6–7.6 m) | Homes, small businesses, rental poles for events |
| 30–35 ft (9–10.7 m) | Schools, municipal buildings, businesses |
| 40–50 ft (12–15 m) | City halls, large commercial and institutional sites |
Canadian flagpole makers’ ranges show the pattern: Flag Outlet sells 18- and 22-foot sectional poles for backyards, cottages and docks, a 20-foot telescoping pole for events and homes, and taller tapered poles for commercial and institutional sites. A Canadian flag rental company describes a 25-foot aluminum pole as a typical choice for a business.
The federal table
Canadian Heritage’s rules for flying the National Flag match the length of an exterior permanent pole to the size of the flag:
| Pole | Flag |
|---|---|
| 5.10 to 6 m (17 to 20 ft) | 0.90 × 1.80 m (3 × 6 ft) |
| 9 to 10.50 m (30 to 35 ft) | 1.40 × 2.80 m (4½ × 9 ft) |
| 12 to 13.50 m (40 to 45 ft) | 1.80 × 3.60 m (6 × 12 ft) |
| 15 m (50 ft) | 2.30 × 4.60 m (7½ × 15 ft) |
The Gouvernement du Québec’s guidance for public buildings mentions 7.6-metre (25 ft), 9-metre (30 ft) and 15-metre (50 ft) masts, with a flag height of about one seventh of the pole. The flag size calculator applies both.
The Peace Tower
The best-known flagpole in Canada is on the Peace Tower of Parliament in Ottawa. According to Public Services and Procurement Canada, the flag flies from a 10.7-metre flagpole at the top of the tower, and the employee who changes it every working day takes the elevator to the observation deck and then climbs 33 metres of stairs and ladders.
Municipal limits
There is no national height limit for flagpoles. Limits come from municipal zoning bylaws, which differ from place to place:
- In Toronto, the zoning bylaw allows antennae, flagpoles, satellite dishes and weather vanes on the roof of a building in a residential zone to exceed the building’s permitted maximum height by 1.5 metres.
- In Saint-Philippe, Québec, the zoning bylaw allows one flagpole per lot in residential zones, with a maximum height of 10 metres measured from the adjacent ground and never more than 3 metres above the main building.
Other municipalities set their own rules, and some treat flagpoles in their sign bylaws when company flags are flown. Whether a building permit is needed depends on the province’s building code; this is covered in the guide to installing a flagpole.
Height, wind and footing
A taller pole meets stronger wind. According to Flag Outlet, wind speed increases with height above the ground and is higher in open country and along the coasts than in city centres. A taller pole also needs a deeper footing and, when it is serviced, work at a greater height. More in the guides to flag sizes and flagpole safety.
Frequently asked questions
What is a common flagpole height for a house in Canada?
Canadian flagpole makers sell residential poles of around 15 to 25 feet (about 4.5 to 7.6 metres). Flag Outlet, for example, sells 18- and 22-foot sectional poles for backyards and cottages. Canadian Heritage’s table of flag and pole sizes starts at a pole of 5.10 to 6 metres (17 to 20 feet) with a 3 × 6 ft flag.
How tall is the flagpole on the Peace Tower?
According to Public Services and Procurement Canada, the flag on the Peace Tower flies from a 10.7-metre flagpole at the top of the tower. The employee who changes it climbs 33 metres of stairs and ladders from the observation deck.
Is there a height limit for flagpoles in Canada?
Not nationally. Height limits come from municipal zoning bylaws. In residential zones in Toronto, a flagpole on the roof may exceed the building’s permitted height by 1.5 metres, and the zoning bylaw of Saint-Philippe in Québec allows one flagpole per residential lot, up to 10 metres and no more than 3 metres above the main building.
How does the flagpole height relate to the flag size?
Canadian Heritage matches them in a table: 5.10–6 m poles take a 0.90 × 1.80 m flag, 9–10.50 m poles 1.40 × 2.80 m, 12–13.50 m poles 1.80 × 3.60 m and a 15 m pole 2.30 × 4.60 m. For the flag of Québec, the Gouvernement du Québec gives a flag height of about one seventh of the pole.
